Club History

Victorian house called "Bowls" now Bowls Close off Uxbridge Road.
Great Stanmore Recreation Ground was opened with a public celebration on May 7 1932. (Little Stanmore was and is the Whitchurch Lane area).
On 6 November 1935 Harrow UDC accepted a donation from Sir John Fitzgerald of 1.1 acres of land south of the entrance from Dennis Lane for an extension to Great Stanmore Recreation Ground. The Deed of Gift was executed on 18 June 1935.

The provisos were:
a) Land to be laid out as a bowling green if practical, and not as Tennis Courts
(The Plan attached to the Land Register of 2 Jan 1940 shows the Green)

b) Council to consult the donor in regard to any proposal for the erection of buildings on the site
(Sir John lived at Warren House, on Wood Lane, now the Islam Centre, sufficiently far away that noisy tennis matches would not have disturbed him!)
Council Minutes of the Open Spaces Committee on the following dates show the progress:
- Bowling Green to be constructed during 1937-39 (16 Nov 1937)
- Tenders for the Bowls Pavilion accepted (20 Sept 1938)
- Contract not exercised and abandoned. The cost from Thomas Cooper (Contractors) Ltd was £1,317 for both Stanmore Bowls and Harrow Garden Village Tennis Pavilions (4 October 1938)
- Surveyor to complete by Direct Labour
- Out to tender again (14 Feb 1939)
Edgware Bowls Club allowed use of bowls green at the Great Stanmore Recreation Ground. Members to take out season tickets (1 Jan 1941)
Edgware and Stanmore Bowling Club permitted to build a pavilion hut as a temporary bowls pavilion (8 Dec 1941).
Meeting with representatives of Great Stanmore Bowls Club and Edgware and Stanmore Bowls Club both having applied for Season 1942 (19 Jan 1942).
Meeting taken place to consider deferred pending further communication from centre (23 Feb 1942).
Stanmore Bowling Club granted use of four rinks for season 1942.
Resolved that The action of the Chairman in authorising subject to weather conditions the commencement of the bowling season 1942 on Saturday 25th April 1942 be confirmed. (20 April 1942).
The present Club House, Toilets and Kitchen area were built in 1987, under the leadership of Mr L.S. de Meza initially and then David S. Lyons (Secretary-who sadly died soon after its completion); M. D. Hamilton and Greville Bolton. There was a Council contribution of £6500 being 50% of the total.
In 2001 the Kitchen was re-equipped through the efforts and skill of Arthur Charlwood.
